Ninth Day – in Transit (Vancouver, Minneapolis, Atlanta and Orlando) – Plans Change.

You know what frightens me? Automatic bathrooms – seriously, when the toilet flushes and I don’t expect it, it gives me a massive fright. Then the taps are automatic, which I can cope with but by the time it comes to the automatic paper towel dispenser, it’s all too much. You know what I do like? The fact that Canadians call a restroom a “washroom”.

I planned to write about things I like and don’t like about Canada whilst on the plane (I even made a list) but plans change, as demonstrated by the fact that I am not currently aboard a plane to Salt Lake City, Utah but rather to Minneapolis, Minnesota. Then onto Atlanta, Georgia and finally Orlando, Florida. Unfortunately, I am on the most budget flight I have ever been on to the point that we don’t even get life vests – you get your seat cushion for a floatation device and it is very turbulent.

True, after writing that paragraph I was airsick – which I never have been before, so note to self – maybe blogging causes airsick on turbulent flights, and now it is 2am, and I am lying on a bed in the Sheraton in Atlanta. Yes: plans do change.

We have had a rollercoaster of a day – firstly of course the fact that we had to redirect our flights, which wasn’t in itself a big deal until it took us so long to get to Minneapolis, mostly to actually land and get to the gate, that they had to delay our flight to Atlanta. The weather in Minneapolis was not good. Then came the problem that there was massive problem with the cargo bay door, and so we had to sit on the tarmac for two hours whilst they replaced it. Then we had to sit on the tarmac even longer while they de-iced the plane, but I must admit I had my face glued to the window, desperate not to miss the de-icing since I had a perfect view. I am such a child, I know, but that kind of thing just never happens in Australia!

So, it took us a long time to get to Atlanta and we didn’t have much food on the way so I am feeling sick right now as I write this, and will soon go and finish my sugar-coated blueberry muffin (it’s assuring me I really am in the USA – only place where I’ve ever gotten a sugar-coated muffin), but by the time we finally got to Atlanta it was too late to fly to Orlando, so the Airline That Shall Remain Nameless gave us vouchers for food, another flight and accommodation for the night. We trotted along to the shuttles (more like caught a train and walked a million miles – the airport is huge!) and after a LOT of faffing about, we found that The Airline had given us accommodation vouchers for Illinois. Not very useful in Georgia. It took us a while to finally get Atlanta accommodation, but I like the Sheraton indeed, so possibly worth it!

It probably isn’t the best idea to try to get from Canada to the South of USA when hundreds of thousands of people have been unable to travel and thousands of flights have been delayed and cancelled because of the Weather in the East, but it’s all a bit of fun. It’s hard to decide the highlight of the day… I got three packages of cookies on the plane, I saw a plane be de-iced, the flights (in total) took six or seven hours longer than they should’ve and when driving from Whistler, Mum accidentally said “Labi and Gance” instead of “Gabi and Lance” and I thought it was hilarious. Yeah… I lead a fun-packed life.

Tomorrow, we leave for Florida at 11am and we probably won’t do a lot but as we all know too well, plans change. So I plan on writing and posting My Review on Canada tomorrow, but I guess we’ll just wait and see.
