WICKED – a review

Well now the time has come, to cast judgement on the musical Broadway performance known as “Wicked”. Now, as the ultimate lover of all things musical and particularly “The Wizard of Oz”, I believe this show is about to face it’s toughest critic yet.
So do all the statements, such as:

“It’s the best musical for more than ten years!”
“There’s something magical about “Wicked”, which is why people keep returning so many times to watch it again and again”
“Truly enchanting”

Really show “Wicked” for what it is?
The judgement is in.
And the answer is… YES. I absolutely loved Wicked – it was fantastic, right from beginning to end. It answers all of those questions, all of the those “whys” from The Wizard of Oz – even the things that you haven’t ever thought of or ever questioned.

For those who don’t know – Wicked is the back-story and prequel to Wizard of Oz, and explains WHY – why the Wicked Witch is Wicked, how everyone came to be, why Glinda (or Galinda) is who she is and basically – why. It also goes further, of course, and extends the story line of Wizard of Oz.

I never, ever – in my life – thought I’d feel sorry for the Wicked Witch of the West, but my heart was aching for her. The actress was amazing, and Glinda was just flippin hilarious. I loved every moment of it.
So if “Wicked” is ever being shown near you, and you’ve never seen it – go, because my word, it is the best performance I have ever seen. And I have seen plenty of performances – plenty of good ones at that!

There are plenty of hilarious, touching and memorable lines from “Wicked” and so many amazing songs, but my favourite line – without a doubt is when a character (not from Wizard of Oz) has a conversation with the Wicked Witch, and it goes down like this:

Wicked Witch: You don’t have to say I’m beautiful – you don’t have to lie to me.
Character: It’s not lying!… It’s just looking at things another way.

Now, in true Bella fashion, is it time for me to point at the flaws, negativities and “constructive criticism” of the play? I suppose it is.

Well for the first time in my life…

I have nothing negative to say. For me – it was utterly perfect.
